Institution Mixte Des Apôtres

The story of Caroline's School

Out of necessity...

In the heart of the most dangerous and impoverished city in the Western Hemisphere, La Reference in City Soleil, Haiti
…One Woman, One Pastor, One dream.... together came a two room school called Institution Mixte Union Des Apotres

Through their endless effort and dedication...volunteers came and built buildings, providing the most basic of necessities that many take for granted….. water, power, and  clothing,

Most of the 300 children who attend the school are malnourished.  Up until now they have been receiving one meal a week...Not enough to fuel their growing bodies and minds.

The phrase “food for thought” takes on a whole new meaning.

Cité Soleil is an extremely impoverished and densely populated commune located in the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area in Haiti.

Cité Soleil originally developed as a shanty town and grew to an estimated 200,000 to 400,000 residents, the majority of whom live in extreme poverty. The area is generally regarded as one of the poorest and most dangerous areas of the Western Hemisphere and it is one of the biggest slums in the Northern Hemisphere.

Food for Thought

Every child deserves a chance to change their world. A stable food supply is necessary for growth.

Food for Thought

Every child deserves a chance to change their world. A stable food supply is necessary for growth.

The UN estimates that 1.5 million children and young people under the age of 18 were affected by the 2010 earthquake, nearly a half-million of whom were under the age of five. At least 300,000 young people were forced from their homes, with hundreds of thousands ending up in the settlement camps located in and around the capital city of Port-au-Prince. Too many of these young people still lack consistent access to nutritious foods.

Even before that event, Haiti was already suffering from widespread malnutrition. In late 2009, the UN estimated that one in four children had stunted growth, with an estimated 2.2 percent of children under the age of five suffering severe acute malnutrition.

The goal is to empower Haitians to help themselves and with your help we are confident that we can achieve that goal.

Help us help the Haitians to help themselves. Knowledge is power. Our motto is “Food For Thought”.

300 students now attend Caroline’s School, their hungry minds drinking up knowledge, a first-rate luxury. But the school remains beset by challenges - hungry bodies are a constant distraction to the task at hand.

While the school buildings have been constructed, the goal is to give the children proper nutrition…some money has been raised, yet more is needed. While the children are in a far better place, physically and mentally, we want to help provide the tools to assist them in being more financially independent and on the path to becoming self sustaining.

We have a 3 step plan:

  1. We have already installed a vegetable garden to grow food for the students on site.  More and better soil and irrigation is needed.

  2. We are growing Moringa trees on the school grounds which is a indigenous tree in Haiti and has become a marketable  herb that is used in health and beauty products which are made locally. Proceeds from these products are donated to the school.

  3. We are in the process of working on a business plan to build an Ice factory in the social enterprise area behind the school which will provide much needed ice for refrigeration to the surrounding community.

No solution in  Haiti will be quick or complete, but we are dedicated to created a better world one child at a time and we ask you to join forces with us to making Haiti a better reality.
